Big Nine says no to New Prague

The Big 9 Conference has rejected New Prague High School's application for membership in the conference that covers large schools in southeastern Minnesota.

Two other Missota Conference members, Northfield and Red Wing, were approved as new members, a move that was expected. Earlier this spring the conference had indicated it would accept Red Wing's application contingent on Northfield also applying. Both schools were original members of the conference. Northfield left for the Missota in the early 1970s and Red Wing followed suit in the mid-1980s.

With the breakup of the Missota Conference, New Prague first indicated it would prefer to join the new Metro West Conference and applied there. At a recent meeting of the New Prague Area School Board, the district decided to also apply to the Big 9 and to the Wright County Conference. If New Prague is rejected by three conferences, it can petition to the Minnesota State High School League, which has the authority to place New Prague in a conference.

The Metro West Conference met this week and rejected applications from Benilde-St. Margaret's and Fridley. It will meet next week to consider applications from Waconia and New Prague.

New Prague Activities Director Brad Skogerboe said the Wright County Conference is also expected to meet next week and could consider New Prague's application at that time.
